An Interesting Day in the Land of NFL Head Coaches

Sometimes things just don’t make a whole lotta sense on the surface. Take today in NFL head coaching news for example. What would you have said should someone have insisted at the day’s outset that the Bills would hire a head coach who last patrolled the sidelines a decade ago and for a total of 34 total games? How about that the Bolts, following a playoff flame-out of impressive proportions, would immediately extend Norv Turner through 2013? Sure, why not. While you’re at it, how ’bout you top it all off with the utterly impatient Jerry Jones not only promising to keep Bum’s kid around, but also talking extension? Not for nuthin,’ but I would’ve sworn you were a bonafide nut job or that I’d been temporarily transported to an alternate universe.

Yet, all three of these things apparently happened. Now, truth be told, my qualifications for judging NFL head coaches are zero. I have none, only what these eyes have seen. Wade Phillips has an 81-58 career record as an NFL head coach. Not too shabby. Norv Turner has been in San Diego for three seasons – and he’s won the AFC West each of those years. Chan Gailey coached two years for the trigger-happy Jerry Jones. Two winning seasons.

Still, something about these guys just fails to inspire. Gailey didn’t light the world on fire at Tech and was demoted earlier this year, stripped of playcalling duties in Kansas City. Not exactly the resume credentials that scream hire this guy! Phillips and Turner? They just share that look. I don’t know any other way to put it. It’s the look of losers. They’ve won playoff games and, one could argue, have been successful. As a fan, though, I see Norv or Wade on the sideline in a big game and I feel my team’s got more than a fighting chance. Can you imagine a rousing halftime speech from either of these guys? Getting in a player’s face? Inspiring a team to elevate its play? Nope, me neither.

So what’s the deal-e-o?
